Why do you want to work as a nanny?

Being a nanny is a unique job, it’s unlike any other career you will have in your life. It’s the exact opposite of a boring office job. Being a nanny is different every day, and every day you have the opportunity to learn and grow, laugh and play and let your inner child out.

What exactly is a nanny?

A part-time nanny is a professional carer hired by a family to look after their kids, usually in their home. Nannies help to look after children when the parents can’t, this may be due to work hours or other outside commitments. Nannies will help to supervise children and also provide fun and educational activities which will help contribute to their early learning.

A nanny’s job is flexible in hours and in requirements, some things that you may be asked to do as nanny include:

  • Feeding, changing and putting children to bed / waking them up in the morning
  • Helping children with their school work / providing some outside learning activities for them
  • Performing pick-ups / drop offs either to school, sport commitments, music lessons, play dates etc
  • Supervising them overnight when you’re not available
  • Light household chores and running errands

Working with children can be challenging sometimes, they cry and they get burst of energy at the most unconventional times, they throw tantrums and sometimes they’re just plain messy. But all of these negatives are just small moment in time, the positives are far and wide. Being a nanny is one of the most fulfilling jobs you can have where every day is an adventure. Here are a few reasons why being a nanny is the best job in the world:

Your schedule is always flexible

This is far from a 9-5 job and all the boring parts of it – the morning commute, meetings, spreadsheets and all those other dull sectors of an office job. Nannying jobs are never the same, and they are never boring. When you take that step to become a nanny, then you become your own boss.

There are different types of nannies, including a full-time nanny, a part-time nanny, or a live-in nanny. Your responsibilities may vary depending on what type of work you can provide and what you are hired for, so it’s a good idea to figure out what type of nanny you want to be. The best thing about all of this is your schedule is decided by you, which means you call all the shots. This applies to the hours you work, but also how you plan your days with the kids.

Being a nanny, you will probably help out with routines such as getting ready for bed and helping out with homework, these are unavoidable. But in your spare time, you get to organise all the fun things you (oh, and the kids) want to do.

You’re learn and grow on the job

Just because you’re taking care of the kids, doesn’t mean they’re the only ones learning and growing. Humans are not static beings, we are always changing and growing no matter what stage of life we are in. Working with children teaches you a lot of important skills which will transfer into your personal life. You will learn to be patient, learn how to multi-task, manage stress and to be organised. Working with children will teach you a lot of life skills as well, and help you to appreciate and small things in life.

You never have the same day twice

This is one of the most appealing aspects of being a nanny. Everyday will be different, and there will always be new opportunities to learn and grow alongside the kids. The best thing about being a nanny is being able to do all the fun and educational things you normally wouldn’t do at a 9-5 desk job. Why not get the painting set out and create some master pieces? Perhaps you feel like going to the zoo today, or baking a cake or watching your favourite Disney movie. These are just some of the things you can do with your kids, and if you’re lucky, you might be doing something new every single day!

And the most important point of all … You get to make a difference

Being a nanny means working closely with children and their families. This is one of the most fulfilling parts of the job. As a nanny, you will be working alongside children in different, pivotal moments of their lives. Your primary job will be providing care for children during their early learning stages of life, which can be rewarding and exciting! You get to be a significant part of a child’s life and help to shape their minds and watch them learn and grow.

So, is all of that sounding exciting to you? Well, lucky for you anyone can become a nanny!

To begin your journey, you first need to know what is expected of you in regards to your credentials.

There is an industry organisation that has been setup to help support nannies and help them adhere to guidelines and expectations, all of which will make your job easier in the future. The Australian Nanny Association (ANA) offers national standards for nannies and home carers which include:

  • Being 18 years or older
  • Hold a current First Aid and CPR certificate
  • Hold a Working with Children Check
  • Hold a National Police Check
  • Have current and reliable child care referees
  • Adhere to the ANA code of conduct

Lastly, while it’s not required to have any specific education to become a nanny, holding a certificate III, Diploma or teaching qualification may be preferrable and may make you more employable. You can also be working towards a relevant qualification OR be attending relevant training workshops and courses. Since you will be working alongside children and helping them with their early learning, these qualifications can be desirable to families looking to hire a nanny.

Luckily, the above credentials aren’t hard to obtain. Take the first steps today to become a nanny and get started on your fulfilling and exciting journey in child care ASAP!
